Clothing To Wear

  • Tee shirt
  • Shirt or micro fleece
  • Sweat shirt/jumper/fleece jacket
  • Warm trousers like activity trousers or jogging pants –  NEVER JEANS.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers  (breathable)
  • Hat
  • Gloves (preferably waterproof)
  • Hillwalking socks
  • Hillwalking boots
  • Gaiters (individual preference)

Clothing To Carry

  • Spare socks
  • Spare gloves (colder months only)

Equipment

  • Daysack (20l minimum)
  • Torch
  • Whistle
  • Platypus or similar hydration system (min 1.5l)
  • Compeed (or similar blister treatment)
  • Swiss Army type knife (Leaders to advise)
  • A plastic bag to keep items in rucksack dry.

Scout Troop will provide all maps, map cases, compasses, survival shelters and first aid kits (unless of course you have your own and wish to use).

Food
Food for a day in the hills should provide a source of energy and warmth. What is taken is often down to individual preferences but here are a few suggestions –

  • A flask of hot tea/coffee/soup/juice
  • Cartons of fruit juice
  • Sandwiches/rolls/pies
  • Mars bars or similar
  • Crisps/nuts
  • Cereal or cake bars
  • Fruit

The food taken on hill walks will not be eaten like a one off  meal – but will tend to be more ‘grazed’ on during the various stops on the hike.  It often makes sense to have multiple smaller packed items so that these can be eaten a little at a time.

It is also good practice to take some sweets with high sugar levels  ie boiled sweets or similar as these can provide a quick boost of energy levels when needed  as well as being available for an emergency situation.
